There are a number of issues that are common to all IP rights holders and other issues that are most prevalent or exclusive to a university/research center environment. For example, universities rarely manufacture any devices themselves for sale, and perform a significant amount of research and development conducted by professors, students and researchers. This presentation covers issues relating to IP management and operation systems of universities, with a focus on university-industry collaborations. 

 

Who is the owner(s), what rights each party has, the incentives and motivations of the inventors at universities and the problems that result will be discussed. We will explore how to avoid or deal with these problems and see what types of issues are encountered by members of the audience.

 

There is a section on just some of the myriad of types of collaborations that are available between parties, such as between the university and for profit companies or even between two universities.

And just about every university would like to monetize their IP assets to get some “return on their investments.”  Different ways to monetize patents, including current trends, will be covered, and again, inquiries will be made as to the existing conditions and future goals of the attendees in this regard. 

 

 

主讲人简介：              

“Michael Stein graduated from the University of Pennsylvania majoring in Electrical Engineering in 1987 and worked as a systems analyst on missile guidance systems for two years.  During part of his time earning his law degree, Mr. Stein performed patent searches in the Patent and Trademark Office.  He has been actively involved in the preparation and prosecution of U.S. patent applications in many different areas of technology, as well as counseling with clients extensively with regard to other intellectual property matters, including patent portfolio management, risk assessment and trademarks.  He founded his firm, STEIN IP LLC, in 2004 in Washington D.C.  The firm currently has eight patent attorneys and patent agents, along with another IP attorney.  He has also participated in seminars and activities of the Asia Pacific Lawyers Association and the Asian Patent Attorneys Association, and has traveled extensively throughout Japan and other parts of Asia as well.”
