Lecture Synopsis:
The notion of scale is an intrinsic dimension of sustainable development, yet it has so far escaped systematic consideration. The main objective of the lecture is to correct this oversight. Echoing recent scholarship on the politics of scale, it suggests that a simplistic view of scale limited to upward and downward shifts across levels of jurisdiction currently predominates. An improved understanding of scale as it pertains to sustainable development has to consider how, and by whom, scales are socially constructed. The benefits of this approach, illustrated through short case studies of mountains, are a greater recognition of the diverse cast of actors and a finer appreciation of integration across sustainable development dimensions. Both will be useful on the way to 2030 and beyond.
