Master of Public Policy for Sustainable Development Goals (MPP-SDG)

Program Overview

On January 1, 2016, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development - adopted by world leaders in September 2015 at an historic UN Summit - officially came into force. Over the next fifteen years, with these new Goals that universally apply to all, countries will mobilize efforts to end all forms of poverty, fight inequalities and tackle climate change, while ensuring that no one is left behind.[1]

On January 16, 2017, President Xi Jinping of China and the President Doris Leuthard of the Swiss Confederation jointly witnessed the signing of the memorandum between Tsinghua University and the University of Geneva (UniGe) on comprehensive cooperation on SDGs. During the roundtable, Former President Qiu Yong of Tsinghua University and President Yves Flückiger of the University of Geneva signed an agreement on a dual Master of Public Policy for Sustainable Development Goals (MPP-SDG) .

Within this cooperative framework, the School of Public Policy and Management (SPPM) of Tsinghua University is partnering with the Geneva School of Social Sciences (G3S) of UniGe to start a highly interdisciplinary 2.5-year dual master’s program for the SDGs from September 2018. This program focuses on defining and developing concrete solutions for the SDGs through hands-on, team-based and project-driven activities, in parallel with courses on the fundamentals of sustainable development. Candidates from a broad range of backgrounds will gain both theoretical understanding and practical field experience that will prepare for employment on sustainable development projects.

This program can be started either at Tsinghua University or the University of Geneva, depending on where the student registers first. Tsinghua University delivers a Master of Science in Management Science, organised by the School of Public Policy and Management (SPPM) and called Master of Public Policy for Sustainable Development Goals (MPP-SDG). The University of Geneva delivers a highly interdisciplinary Master of Science (M.Sc.) hosted by the Geneva School of Social Sciences (G3S), the Master in Innovation, Human Development and Sustainability (MIHDS).

Dual Degrees

Upon successful completion of the dual degree requirements, international students will receive one master degree from each party: the degree “Master of Science in Management Science” of Tsinghua University and the degree “Master of Science” of the University of Geneva.

Costs (Unit: RMB Yuan)

(1) Application Fee: RMB 800

(2) At Tsinghua University, tuition fees are RMB 120,000. At Geneva, tuition fees are 500 Swiss francs per semester.

(3) Accidental Injury and Hospitalization Insurance in China: RMB 800/year

(4) Accommodation in students’ dormitories on Tsinghua campus, Beijing: RMB 40/day per person for double rooms, RMB 30/day per person for triple rooms.
