On March 31st, Elizabeth Fung, a distinguished alumna of MID2010, helped to launch MIDialogue, a new informal brown bag lecture series on life in the international development sector. At the inaugural event, Elizabeth shared her work experience, advised current MID students and answered their questions.
Elizabeth kicked off the event with a brain storming exercise which highlighted the variety of strategies for developing professional goals. She then explained how this sort of career planning guided her internship experiences while she pursued her MPA degree at the MID program. During her lecture, she encouraged the students to seize every opportunity possible and emphasized the diversity of routes to accomplishing their career goals. She also explained that it’s not only important to stay focused on your vision, but to continuously work towards it. Elizabeth elaborated on this point by describing her job hunting experience after graduating from MID. Now working as an account executive at the FleishmanHillard Hong Kong Office, Elizabeth explained that although she is not directly working in the international development field, she is still able to play a role in shaping the development of the sector and to make use of the research and writing skills she honed while at MID.
MIDialogue is a new monthly lecture series that aims to provide an informal setting in which MID alumni, development practitioners and academia can share their experience and advice with the future practitioners in the MID program.(by Claire HSU, MID 2013)
