2018 Tsinghua SPPM International Case Analysis Competition of Public Policy on Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs)

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are initiated by the United Nations in 2015, which consist of 17 universal goals and cover a broad range of social and economic development issues. Each goal has a set of targets. The SDGs are also known as the 2030 Agenda or the Global Goals for Sustainable Development, succeed the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) ended in 2015 and serve as an intergovernmental agreement for countries around the world.
Each team of participants should focus on a case topic that is relevant to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). You are required to write a case which records typical practices or stories about SDGs and use theoretical frameworks or concepts to analyze the case from an academic perspective. You have the opportunity to pick an issue in your local community or one that affects people around the world. The topic you focus on should allow you to investigate an issue from various aspects, but it should not be too broad.
3. Why participate in the competition?
▲ The competition will provide a platform for you to cooperate, interact and compete with students from various countries, disciplines and cultures.
▲ You will work in teams to research real-world challenges, interview organizations and people in SDG-related fields, discover exciting cases and find innovative public policy solutions for sustainable development problems.
▲ You will deepen your understanding of case study methodology, which requires students to develop skills in analytical thinking and reflective judgment by discussing complex, real-life scenarios.
▲ SPPM will select excellent candidates from the competition to study at Tsinghua - UniGe Dual Degree Program: Master of Public Policy for Sustainable Development Goals (MPP-SDG).
4. Eligibility criteria
▲ Current undergraduate students from all over the world are eligible to take part in this competition.
▲ You can participate in the competition as an individual or in a team of up to five people.
▲ You should be proficient in English.
5. Timeline
● May 6, 2018 – June 6, 2018
Register and submit a case proposal
Participants should register through our online platform by 24:00 June 6, 2018. Each team should submit a case proposal.

On May 6, 2018 we will open the online registration platform.
● June 7, 2018 – June 20, 2018
Selection of case proposals
Judges will review case proposals and will announce the teams who will advance to the next stage to conduct field research on June 20, 2018.
● June 21, 2018 – July 31, 2018
Conduct field research
Participants will conduct interviews and field research. Each team should submit a case analysis report by 24:00 July 31,2018.
● August 1, 2018 – August 14, 2018
Selection of case analysis reports
Judges will review case analysis reports and will announce the teams who will advance to the final competition on 14 August, 2018.
● August 26, 2018
Final competition
The final competition will occur on the morning of August 26, 2018 in Beijing. Each team should present their outcomes and answer questions from judges. Judges will assess each team according to their performance in their presentation as well as their oral defense session.

6. Rewards
First Place: one team 5000 USD per team
Second Place: two teams 3000 USD per team
Third Place: three teams 1000 USD per team
Bonus:
● Excellent cases will be archived by the China Case Center for Public Policy & Management (CCCPPM), which is the first professional producer and repository of Chinese public administration cases. Authors will be paid and will receive certificates.
● Chinese students who come in first, second, or third place and apply for the Tsinghua - UniGe Dual Degree Program: Master of Public Policy for Sustainable Development Goals (MPP-SDG) will qulify for exam exemtion and have the opportunnity to receive interviews (即获得推免面试资格).
Overseas students who come in first, second or third place will be given prior consderiation if they apply for the Tsinghua - UniGe Dual Degree Program: Master of Public Policy for Sustainable Development Goals (MPP-SDG).
Note: For detailed information about the MPP-SDG program,please check the attached documents. For non-English speaking applicants, they should prepare the English proficiency test certificate in advance: TOFEL 92 or IELTS 7.0.

8. About MPP-SDG Program
On January 16th, 2017, President Xi Jinping of China and the President Doris Leuthard of the Swiss Confederation jointly witnessed the signing of the memorandum between Tsinghua University and the University of Geneva (UniGe) on the comprehensive cooperation on SDGs. Within this cooperative framework, the School of Public Policy and Management (SPPM) of Tsinghua University is partnering with the Geneva School of Social Sciences (G3S) of UniGe to start a highly interdisciplinary 2.5-year dual master's program for the SDGs from September 2018. This program focuses on defining and developing concrete solutions for the SDGs through hands-on, team-based and project-driven activities, in parallel with courses on the fundamentals of sustainable development.
9. About SPPM
The School of Public Policy and Management (SPPM) of Tsinghua University was founded in 2000. As the first graduate school in public administration in China, the mission of the SPPM is to foster a new generation of leadership in Chinese and global civic affairs, to generate policy impacts for public benefits, and to pursue academic excellence in public policy and management research. The School's long-term objective is to become a world-class institution that actively engages in teaching, research, and consulting in global public affairs.
SPPM has made significant efforts to study and promote sustainable development. In addition to starting the 2.5-year dual master’s program for the SDGs,Tsinghua University also established the Institute for Sustainable Development Goals, which serves as a bridge between China and the rest of the world for mutual learning and exchange to drive SDGs solutions and achievements.
In the past years, SPPM has organized several national public policy case analysis competitions targeted toward Chinese students. The 2017 case competition was co-organized with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and attracted 447 teams of undergraduate students from 156 universities, and 76 teams of master students from 47 universities to participate.
This year, SPPM will hold its first international case analysis competition specifically on the theme of Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs). The Competition will provide a platform for students from various countries, disciplines and cultures to cooperate and exchange ideas. The goal of the competition is to allow students to discover cases for sustainable development and find innovative public policy solutions for lasting development challenges. The competition will also help to promote case study methodology, which requires students to develop skills in analytical thinking and reflective judgment by discussing complex, real-life scenarios.
10. About China Case Center for Public Policy & Management (CCCPPM)
The China Case Center for Public Policy & Management (CCCPPM) was established on July 3rd, 2004 as a subsidiary of the School of Public Policy & Management (SPPM), Tsinghua University. The primary goal of the center is to develop case studies on public policy and management and to promote case study and case teaching methods in China. Now the center has become the largest professional producer and repository of Chinese public administration case studies. More than 400 Chinese cases, 50 English, and 200 multi-media cases have been developed in areas of public policy, public economics, public strategic management, crisis management, NGO management, environmental policy and so on. The Tsinghua University Press has also published a series of classical cases.
Meanwhile, the center holds seminars and training programs on case teaching and case writing annually to promote teaching techniques and case studies among domestic educators. The center also organizes yearly public policy case analysis competitions. In addition, CCCPPM successfully held the 2017 NASPAA-Batten Student Simulation Competition.The CCCPPM served as the first Asian site authorized by NASPAA (Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration) to host this event. The compition attracted students from four countries to compete in a day-long immersive computer simulation that challenged them to advance global food security.
