Introduction:
From 2011 to 2013, a local opposition against an Australian-owned rare earth refinery plant, emerged into the largest environmental protest ever seen in Malaysia. Yew will share his data collected during his preliminary fieldwork in Malaysia, describing the state-society interactions throughout this conflict. With an analysis of the unique socio-political configuration, he will trace the origins and implications of the conflict, which may find parallels with experiences beyond Malaysia.
Yew Wei Lit received his degrees from Multimedia University, Malaysia and the London School of Economics and Political Science. With an interdisciplinary perspective, his PhD research is a comparative qualitative analysis of environmental conflict and government responses in Asia, with a major focus on China and Malaysia.
