Uri Rosenthal began his professional academic career in 1970 as a lecturer at the University of Amsterdam.Besides his academic duties, Professor Rosenthal was, until his appointment as foreign minister, also chairman of the Institute for Safety, Security and Crisis Management. From 1997 to 2002 he was deputy chair of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO).
Rosenthal has represented the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) in the Senate of the States General since June 1999. In 2005 he became leader of the VVD in the Senate. In that capacity he was active in international organisations including the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly and the Euro-Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly.
In addition, Mr Rosenthal has been a crown-appointed member of the Social and Economic Council and a member of the Dutch Transport Safety Board. From 12 to 25 June 2010 and from 5 to 21 July 2010 he served as mediator in the negotiations on the formation of the new Dutch government.
Mr Rosenthal has published extensively, particularly with regard to safety and security, crisis management and public administration. He has also worked for many academic and trade journals, as both an editor and columnist.
