On September 22nd, Chinese and International programs co-hosted the field study and internship sharing meeting. This was the first event of field trip courses opened for international students this semester. The purpose of this event is to share difference experiences and learnings by bring Chinese programs students in to discussion, summarize the key points from Chinese and MID, MIDG and IMPA programs field trips and MID internship of 2015-2016 academic year, in particular, providing a platform for students to share and exchange reflection and deepen their own understanding towards their courses. Associate Dean, Ms. MENG Bo hosted this event along with Deputy Party Secretary, Ms. XIE Jing, International Program staffs and more than 60 students attended the meeting.
Ms. MENG Bo first introduced the Chinese students’ field trip and the achievements of MID, MIDG and IMPA field trips of 2015-2016 academic year. After that, Ms. XIE Jin introduced the tradition of Tsinghua University’s social practice and aim of Chinese and international students’ summer field trips. Despite the differences of organization, structure and expectation for Chinese students and international students’ field trips, we hope in the future, the two groups’ could be merged to be one team together to do the social practice.

Started by MID, MIDG and IMPA’s warm-up field trip video, 2016 PHD candidate Wang Hongshuai first introduced Chinese programs’ field trip and mentioned the different purpose of field trips between master and doctoral program, and shared his field trip taken in Sichuan province this summer. While 2014 PHD candidate Guo Dong shared the challenges he faced and experience he got in Tibet, regarding the poverty alleviation and sustainable development areas.
Chinese Students’ Sharing
MID 2015 student Lily (Qili JIN) from U.S., shared her internship experiences at United Nations Development Programme, The Boston Consulting Group and Asian Development Bank. Based on her own story, she has suggested making more friends, learning more Chinese and setting a long-term plan. MID 2015 Canada students Steve (Stephen Daniel WEEDON) shared MID field trip experience at Gansu. In this June in Lanzhou and Wuwei, they heard China’s poverty alleviation policy; went to rural area and saw the agriculture achievements; learnt how Central Asia and China’s western provinces development followed the national “One Road and One Belt” strategy. That experience also strengthened their knowledge regarding Chinese development practice. MIDG 2015 Uzbekistan student Bakhrom (Bakhrom ABDUKADIROV) and Albania student Haris (Haris VONGLI) shared MIDG-IMPA field trip experience in Shanghai and mentioned:’ Although the schedule is really tight, it is, indeed, a very precious opportunity for us to know and understand China deeply and comprehensively.’ IMPA 2016 student Anna (Mamokhethi Anna MOSHABE) from Lesotho introduced MIDG-IMPA field trips in Xi’an. By visiting different places, students were surprised the accomplishments of China has made after reform and openness, which really improved people’s lives qualities, urbanization process and economic growth. At the same time, they also realized the challenges and problems China faced now.
International students’ sharing
Field training is a critical component of the curriculum for every SPPM student. The purpose is to create more opportunities for them to get better understandings about China’s development practice. Currently, MID, MIDG and IMPA programs have designed unique field trainings according to students’ characteristics and interests.
