The day began on the football pitch, where team captains Chimbili (MID 2011) and Leonard (IMPA 2012) chose mixed teams from across the classes. A fierce match ensued, with Chimbili’s team taking an early lead before being overwhelmed in the second half by some last minute goals by Jahon. Both teams welcomed some talented first-time players, including Courtney from MID 2011 and MID administrator Lucy, with Lucy later refereeing the second half and ensuring that neither team cheated too often!
After an hour of football, both teams were already hungry. The party split into two groups, with some enjoying an excellent Chinese meal in the Taoliyuan cafeteria and others going for pizza. The games started again on the volleyball pitch, and after a brief introduction for new players the teams were eager to restart. As with football, some promising new sporting talent emerged in the form of Abraham and Patience, both from IMPA, whilst volleyball experts Luis and Chimbili led Chimbili’s team to victory after a rocky start. Meanwhile, those waiting to be subbed into the match were able to test their strength on the nearby playground equipment- Jacinta (MID 2011) and Tito (IMPA 2011) proved unbeatably strong in this unofficial sports day extra- perhaps the Olympic weightlifting champions of the future?
The teams had a quick break before the third sport of the day: basketball. Here, SPPM’s basketball superstar Jennifer took over the running of Chimbili’s team, clearly worrying Leonard and his fellows, who promptly enlisted the services of SPPM’s Chinese basketball star He Zehong. Despite Jen’s best efforts, and some fantastic playing Tojo (IMPA 2012), Victor and the rest of the team, by half time the scoreline looked rather one-sided! With Li Fucheng relegated to the sidelines for the last quarter, things evened out a bit, but the unstoppable force of the rest of the team, including Edison (MID 2012) and Jahon (IMPA 2012) meant that victory in the final event went to Leonard once again. Luckily, nobody on Chimbili’s team was too disappointed as when the match finished, match official Stephan declared that everybody was the winner of sports day!
With new friends made and friendly rivalries kindled, we all went home happy and eager for the next MID-IMPA sports day.
