About the Program
Launched in 2007, the Master of Public Administration in International Development (MID) degree program at Tsinghua University’s School of Public Policy and Management is a two-year Master’s Degree program. It is designed to deliver a strong academic and practical foundation for students to become active global citizens and professionals of China’s development.
Why MID?
Educating Development Professionals
In 2009, Tsinghua University was one of the eleven universities worldwide, and the only university selected in China by the Master’s of Development Practice (MDP) program. Led by the MacArthur Foundation in the United States, Tsinghua University launched a Master’s program with the goal to cultivate a new generation of international development professionals.
With its location in Beijing, China, the MID Program harnesses the unique experiences of Chinese expert scholars and practitioners of development from the School of Public Policy and Management and its resources. Students are trained in public management from an international perspective with an emphasis on Chinese practices and sustainable development.
With the integration of the School of Public Policy and Management’s resources, around 40 courses will be offered in the two-year degree program. Students can from the curriculum tracks of either China Studies or International Development.
International Development
The International Development track explores the four pivotal areas of development: management, social sciences, natural sciences, and health science in order to improve students’ ability to identify and address the challenges of sustainable development.
Chinese Public Affairs
Chinese Public Affairs track aims to train students to become professional talents of China’s development practice. Students can choose up to 7 concentration courses focused on all aspects of China, such as in politics, law, society, economics, culture and philosophy.
The program gives students opportunities to gain first-hand experience of integrated development approaches in a real-world context. The MID Program enhances the “Practice Component” by organizing events that will complement the students’ fieldwork, such as site visits, meetings, lectures, and other academic events.
Internship. It is a required component of the curriculum and offers valuable work experience in a novel environment.
Field trips. Daylong trips during the academic semesters and weeklong trips during the academic breaks will be offered in the duration of the course.
Guest Lecture Series. It consists of a series of guest lecturers allowing students to exchange ideas with elite scholars and practitioners.
Since 2007, the MID program has been a tremendous success in educating development practitioners around the world. 180 MID students have come from 45 countries with diverse backgrounds. An enriching global alumni network has been established, including 130 MID students who have graduated and committed themselves to careers in international organizations, governments, NGOs, foundations and enterprises.
Admissions
Basic Requirements
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
Non-native speaker: TOEFL 85/ IELTS 6.5
Work experience in development fields preferable but not required

(1) The completed Foreigner's Application Form for Admission to Graduate Programs of Tsinghua University, signed by the applicant.
(2) Personal statement (at least 2 pages)
(3) The original or the notarized degree certificate or proof of education in academic institution, and academic transcript
(4) Two recommendation letters from scholars of associate professor or higher, or employers
(5) Two copies of applicant's recent photo (cap-free, 2 inches, attach it on the application form)
(6) Two copies of the page with personal information in the passport (personal and ordinary passport)
(7) For non-native English speakers, please provide English level certificates (TOEFL 85 or IELTS 6.5).
(8) Completed Foreigner’s Application Form for Tsinghua University Scholarship (if applicable)
(9) The application fee is RMB 600 (non-refundable).
*All required documents submitted should be original in Chinese or in English, otherwise notarized translations in Chinese or English are required by the MID Program Office by post mail or in person. (None of the above application documents will be returned.)
Admission
1st Round: November 1 to December 31, 2013.
2nd Round: January 1 to February 28, 2014. .
*From March 1 to April 30, 2014, normal admission will be on rolling-basis, which depends on the vacancies.

Scholarship
A limited number of scholarships are available on a competitive basis, which are Chinese Government Scholarship, Beijing Government Scholarship, (http://is.tsinghua.edu.cn/EN/scholarship/intro.html/), School of Public Policy and Management Scholarship, and IPRCC Scholarship.

Assistantship
A limited number of assistantships are awarded each semester to MID students. Graduate assistantships at SPPM are intended for the recruitment of highly qualified MID students who have been admitted to the MID Program. Current assistantship types include graduate assistantship, research assistantship and teaching assistantship.
*Applicants must complete the Foreigner’s Application Form for Tsinghua University Scholarship, and submit it to the MID Program Office by the deadline with other required application documents.

Tuition and Fees
The MID program is a full program of 24 months that is taught entirely in English. The tuition for the program is 120,000 RMB, not including miscellaneous fees. Accidental Injury and Hospitalization Insurance is 600 RMB per year.
