On April 9, MID program organized Guest Lecture No.17, Spatial Development Strategy and Regional Governance of Beijing Capital Region, at School of Public Policy and Management. MID Program Academic Director, Professor YIN Chengzhi invited, Dr. TANG Yan, Associate Professor from School of Architecture, Tsinghua University, to share latest research findings regarding the spatial development and governance of Beijing capital region.
Within one and half hours, Professor TANG mainly introduced the development plan of Beijing capital region, as well as challenges and opportunities in the transitional period. She reviewed evolution and spatial structure of Beijing as a capital city, especially its transformation in modern times, and finally elaborated current urban system in this area. The research confirmed the necessity of collaborative development for Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei as a region. She also introduced several available approaches, which may facilitate the regional development, such as optimization of regional subway, light track, and railway system, as well as spatial restructure of regional urban system. In addition, she also illustrated the opportunity and challenges that the regional development is encountering such as acerbating environmental pollution and traffic congestion.
Professor Tang acquired her Ph. D. at School of Architecture, Tsinghua University. She has been working at Tsinghua From 2008. Now she is serving as an associate professor at the School of Architecture, Tsinghua University, as well as the Editor in Charge & Editorial Board member of China City Planning Review, the Associate Editor of Urban Design Newsletter. She is also a German Chancellor Scholar of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Her main research interests are urban design, strategic planning and regional governance.
